Meet Your Lettuce : Romaine

A wise man once said “Lettuce is like a conversation.”

You know WHERE your food comes from and you know WHO your food comes from, but what about the WHAT?  We know that you know greens are good for you but when it comes to choosing them, how does one decide what to eat?  WHAT matters?  WHAT do these greens contain?
Every green is unique in flavor, texture, and nutritional value and we’d like to make you an expert in all things farm-fresh and yummy.  This is YB Farm has designated every Wednesday to teaching you all about our produce, what it tastes like, where it comes from, and why you should get some in your belly ASAP.  Welcome!

It’s easy, in a world of super greens and diet fads, to forget about the little guys.  In the wake of the world’s kale craze we at YB sometimes feel like some of the more classic salad greens have been forgotten – thrown to the side to make way for the widespread, the crunchier, the more popular.  This week we’ll be focusing on one of those lettuces. It was a salad staples for decades and we think that it’s time to appreciate all that Romaine Lettuce has done for us.

It’s unfortunate that Romaine has been left in the dust as it is actually one of the most nutritionally valuable salad greens!  Yes, you read that correctly.

Romaine contains the following good stuff:

Vitamin A
Vitamin K
Molybdenum
Folate
Fiber
Manganese
Potassium
Copper
Iron
Vitamin C
Vitamin B1
Biotin
Beta-Carotene
Omage-3 Fatty Acids
Protein
Lactucarium

Bet you weren’t expecting such a long list 😉 !
